Veterans: Become a Leader in Franchising ? not a ?job guy? | The ...

The past several years have not been promising for those looking for jobs, whether you are a college student or a transitioning service member. As a matter of record, those who do get hired are more likely to land a part-time gig as opposed to a full-time opportunity ? and so that presents a dilemma: why move into part-time work when one can make more on unemployment?

I think we need to adjust our scope and target the real solution to getting America back on track and the talent back to work: business ownership.

Yes. I know. Some of you will immediately jump to the argument that capital is tough to come by, that banks make it difficult to even secure a five dollar line of credit let along a small business loan and so business ownership is yesterday?s pipe dream. Unless we are talking franchising.

According to the International Franchise Association?s 2012 Veterans in Franchising Study, the franchise industry has supported more than 64,000 veterans, military spouses, and wounded warriors with employment opportunities since 2011.

Franchise.org clearly states the advantages of franchising over traditional business ownership: ?The mutually beneficial relationship that exists between franchisors and franchisees makes franchising unique in the world of business. It provides entrepreneurs with an affordable means of accelerating expansion and achieving development goals more quickly than might otherwise be the case, and with far less risk. Similarly, franchisees have a head start because of the support provided by the franchise system. Franchising means being in business for yourself but not by yourself.?

Franchisors also increased efforts to recruit veterans as franchise owners, bringing 4,314 new veteran franchise owners to the industry since 2011. Also, veteran franchise owners were 30 percent more likely to have hired a veteran than non-veteran-owned franchise businesses.

Jerry Flannigan, a U.S. Army veteran with 20 years of business experience, is looking for a few good men and women to run junk removal franchise. JDog Junk Removal is a franchise that is exclusively available to veterans and active duty military personnel. No other franchise has ever been developed by a veteran solely for veterans. In Jerry?s words, ?It?s a job that?s well-suited to soldiers, combining trust, teamwork and a strong work ethic. And, it also involves that other important soldier skill?helping people out of a jam.?

With more than 70 percent of those who are employed actively seeking ?new jobs,? there is satisfaction in the franchise world. Four out of five veterans ?enjoy operating? their franchise business (83%), ?enjoy being part of this franchise organization,? (81%), would ?recommend to others? their franchise brand (79%).

Bottom line: Join the ranks of ownership. You?ve got the skills ? find the team and opportunity that match. Visit Franchise.org today and begin exploring what may turn out to be your next mission.
