Spring break splurges spark personal finance, economy stories ...

Spring break is coming up for college students and families, and it?s an opportunity to prepare not only some interesting feature stories about the tourism, transportation and hospitality industries, but to take a look at college?student spending patterns in light of the ongoing drumbeat about the trillion-dollar student loan ?bubble? some say looms.

Spring Break 2013Travelocity says some spring break destinations buck the trend of higher airfares this year, and is out with a release noting pricing to popular destinations like Cancun, Florida?s beach resorts, Las Vegas and the Bahamas.?? And the San Francisco Chronicle offers some insight into this year?s spring break season, which overlaps a very early (March 31) Easter ? meaning families traveling for the holiday will be competing with college students for good airfares, seats on airplanes and other financial aspects of travel.? A heads-up on this potential conflict might make for a good spring travel story for general audiences.

Here?s an interesting 2011?paper from the Journal of Tourism Insights, ?Spring Break: Pulling in the student market,? which analyzes the decision-making process students go through when planning spring break, including factors such as cost, geographic destination and so on.? If you?re in a spring break destination, this paper might help you compose some good questions for executives in the tourism industry.?? And ask them about Easter too; does the overlap of the family holiday and college travel season crimp business?? Or boost it?

If you?re covering spring break from an economic or personal finance aspect, the paper also offers some good stats, though uUnfortunately, the authors decided not to pursue the source of spring break funding, that would?ve been interesting in light of the student loan debate.) They find that half of students spend less than $500 on spring break; it would be interesting to intercept a handful of students as they plan their trips and show a breakdown (maybe they could blog daily spending?) of the cost of various vacations.

If you?re doing any student loan packages, this might be the time to ask recent grads to look back at how they spent the funds they now are paying back.? No doubt many were prudent, but there?s no denying that some people use loan money for fun and travel ? this TIME column on the matter of student spending?raised a lot of umbrage in its comments area ? why not ask loan-repayers to pull up their credit-card statements or bank statements from past spring-break season, tote up the spending, account for which funds were used (loan money, earnings, etc.) and ask how they feel in hindsight about the expenditures??? Whether or not they feel the splurges were worthwhile, the reality check will be interesting food for thought as current students plan spring break.

Don?t forget about pre-trip spending too, and what opportunities that makes for local merchants from fashion and apparel outlets to tanning salons.?? And check out what merchants, attractions such as museums, spas, pubs, cinemas and other businesses may be doing to attract the staycation crowd, both the college and family demographic.

And finally, if you?re in a storm-struck area, you might want to see if curtailed mid-winter breaks for K-12 students?(making up for earlier snow days) is causing pain to any businesses; here?s a CBS News story that says indoor venues like bowling alleys suffer when kids don?t get expected school vacations.

Wrestling diplomacy cuts tension at nuclear talks with Iran

ALMATY (Reuters) - For a brief moment on Tuesday, the nuclear dispute between Iran and the United States took a back seat to sport.

U.S. diplomats found rare common ground with the Islamic Republic at a fresh round of nuclear negotiations between Tehran and world powers, noting Iran's victory in the freestyle wrestling World Cup held in the Iranian capital last week.

Sports officials from the two countries - which are at odds over the nuclear issue and many others - have expressed dismay at a surprise recommendation by the International Olympic Committee this month to drop wrestling from the 2020 Games.

"During the plenary, we did note Iran's success in the recent wrestling World Cup and our shared view that wrestling should continue to be an Olympic sport," a U.S. official said on Tuesday after the start of high-stakes nuclear talks.

Iran and six world powers are holding their first meeting in eight months in the Kazakh city of Almaty this week, to try to start resolving a dispute over Tehran's nuclear program that threatens to trigger another war in the Middle East.

Diplomatic ties between Iran and the United States have been cut since 1980 after Iranian students took 52 U.S. diplomats hostage in the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic revolution.

But wrestling, one of Iran's most popular sports, has proven a rare arena in which the two countries have friendly relations.

U.S. wrestlers visited Tehran last week to compete in the World Cup, where 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs was cheered on wildly by Iranian fans at the capital's Azadi stadium.

"Iran has amazing fans!" Burroughs tweeted, posting a picture of Iranian supporters eagerly reaching down over a barrier at the stadium to touch his hand.

A second U.S. official told reporters in Almaty prior to the start of the February 26-27 talks that Iran and the United States agreed that wrestling should continue as an Olympic sport.

"Although we cannot come to agreement yet where it comes to Iran's nuclear program, clearly our wrestlers get along just fine," the U.S. official said.

"We and Iran agree completely that the Olympics should continue to have wrestling as a sport ... so we will be working vigorously with them to make that come to pass."

There was no immediate reaction to the U.S. statement from Iranian diplomats. Wrestling is a major source of Iran's Olympic medals, and Iranian sports officials have said they will work with other countries to lobby for it to stay in the Games.

"The issue of removing wrestling from the Olympics is very serious," Mohammad Aliabadi, the head of Iran's Olympic committee, told state news agency IRNA this month.

"We must prevent this action with the help of many of the major countries in the world," Aliabadi said, without naming any specific nation.

South Africa complete whitewash against Pakistan

Pak Vs SA 3rd Test 2013

Sports, Cricket News ? South Africa crushed Pakistan by an innings and 18 runs and completed the clean sweep on day three of the third test at Centurion on Sunday.

Pakistan could make 235 runs in the second innings.

Starting the day on 14 for one, Pakistan showed some fighting spirit losing only Younus Khan (11), who played a thick edge off Dale Steyn to Graeme Smith at first slip, in the morning session.

Azhar Ali (27) and Imran Farhat put on 54 for the third wicket before the former ran himself out in calamitous fashion.

Farhat worked the ball to fine leg and after running one, Ali turned for a second at the wicketkeeper?s end. He was always struggling against the bullet throw of Steyn from the boundary and in the end was well short.
Pakistan lost two more wickets with the score on 107 as they began to implode.

Kyle Abbott picked up his eighth wicket of the match when Farhat (43) slashed at a wide delivery and was caught by wicketkeeper AB de Villiers.

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq (5) then became Rory Kleinveldt?s first wicket of the game when he got a thin edge to a ball. Kleinveldt soon took a second when Asad Shafiq (6) scooped a delivery to Vernon Philander at mid-off.

South Africa made 409 in their first innings.

They won the first test in Johannesburg by 211 runs followed by a four-wicket victory in Cape Town. Agencies

Iran says it has captured a foreign 'enemy drone'

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard says it has captured a foreign unmanned aircraft during a military exercise in southern Iran.

The official IRNA news agency on Saturday quoted Gen. Hamid Sarkheili as saying that the Guard's electronic warfare unit spotted signals indicating that foreign drones were trying to enter Iranian airspace. Sarkheili, a spokesman for the military exercise, says Guard experts took control of one drone and brought it down near the city of Sirjan where the exercise is being held.

Sarkheili didn't say if the drone was American. He referred to it only as a "foreign enemy drone."

Iran has claimed to have captured several U.S. drones, including a RQ-170 Sentinel advanced drone in December 2011 and at least three ScanEagle aircraft.

Abrahm Louw ? Blog Archive ? Mountain Biking Endurance Races

For the casual cyclist, mountain biking is a wonderful way to enjoy the great outdoors as well as get a great work out. Today, mountain biking is growing rapidly into an excitingly popular sport. With that growth arises an entirely new subculture of mountain bikers who race professionally.Every year there are hundreds of events and races organized across the nation for mountain bike enthusiasts. These endurance races are generally for those in the absolute top percentage of mountain bikers. It takes a certain amount of conditioning and performance to compete in endurance races as the competition itself is so demanding. There are plenty of different categories, but these races can be as long as 12 hours, taxing the limits of human endurance.Types of RacesOf the many categories of endurance races, most are beyond the scope of normal cyclists? physical limits. Starting at three hours these races only scale upwards, reaching six or even twelve hours in length.

The shorter three hour races are separated by gender and occasionally by age groups, but the longer races often open up to include both genders and all age groups. There are numerous formats for endurance races as well. Some races are strictly solo races such as the shorter races. However, as they get longer, endurance races include all combinations of team work and trade off riding, with teams of up to four riders.Endurance races are highly organized much like the marathons many of the nation?s major cities hold annually and require registration and occasionally physicals. In addition to assuring the participants are physically capable of participating, these events often require a demonstration of certain safety equipment that meets particular regulations.Safety MeasuresSafety is probably the most important thing organizers see to when there is a race. In addition to making sure each rider is in acceptable physical condition and has the proper gear, mountain bikes themselves are often checked to ensure they are in top shape, with fully aired tires, tightened handlebars, and properly adjusted frames and shocks.

Prohibited materials on the bike are also carefully watched. Such prohibited materials include reflectors, kickstands, adjustable hubs, sound frames, true wheels and any personal media devices. All of these items are checked for and expected to be removed before the race starts.Finding Endurance RacesEndurance mountain biking is a high level addition to the sport of mountain biking. For that reason, if you are interested in getting involved, you should try and contact your local mountain biking association or club. They?ll have all the information you need to not only train for and prepare your bike for competition but the rules associated with the sport. There are numerous websites out there that cater to the crowd of endurance mountain bikers if you are looking for more information.

For anyone who has just gotten into mountain biking endurance racing might be a bit too much for you yet. However, you?ll find that in time you?ll be looking for a bit more of a challenge, and these longer more intense races might be just the thing you?re looking for to push your limits and test your physical conditioning. If you?re serious about endurance racing, take the time necessary to research and get in the shape necessary to compete in these races.

Custom iPad Cases for Teachers and Students Make a Splash in Schools

Custom iPad Cases for Teachers and Students Make a Splash in Schools ? (February 21, 2013)

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) February 21, 2013

Through a recent survey, iGearUnlimited.com asked customers for the features they look for in a perfect iPad case, and here are the top 6 answers:

  • Protect the iPad from all angles front, back, all sides, and all corners
  • Auto wake/sleep using Apples smart cover design
  • Lightweight, thin profile, durable protection without adding bulk
  • Full access to all ports, buttons, and controls
  • Multiple viewing angles: completely flat on the table, slightly tilted for typing, and at least three vertical angles for movie watching
  • Customizable design let users put their favorite images on the case for a completely customized experience

While some cases on the market offer some of these features, finding a customized iPad case generally means giving up front protection, since almost all customizable cases only are available as a one-piece clip-on style for the back of the iPad. Although a magnet-attached smart cover can be added, many users are thinking twice about this combination because of the horror stories of users grabbing onto the cover while the iPad itself does a free fall.

The new Custom iPad Case from iGearUnlimited.com delivers on all points. The case is engineered to great precision and the iPad fits snugly. The lightweight hard shell case is made with polycarbonate, one of most durable materials around, protecting the iPad from daily use and abuse. The iPad is completely enclosed from all sides, with precise cutouts for all ports and buttons. The Custom iPad Case comes with two sets of magnets one set to activate the iPads auto wake/sleep feature, and another to keep the case closed when not in use. Using three strategically positioned hinges, the iPad can be positioned at five different viewing angles, from completely flat to vertically tilted for use in any situation.

Most importantly, the customization feature on iGears iPad case allows schools to brand the iPad with a consistent image, and allows each student to personalize the front cover with their favorite image. Students can upload their own photo artwork to the ordering website, scale and crop the image, add text, and approve the design immediately online. The online design tool offers built-in Facebook integration and makes the process super-easy, even for novice users. The HTML5-based customization engine means it can be used on virtually all desktop and mobile devices, including the very iPad the case for which is being designed. The cases come in white for full color printing, or in black for laser engraving, and are available for both iPad 2/3/4 and iPad Mini.

iGearUnlimited offers awesome, customized cases, for you or as a great gift! says Siva Om, Contributing Editor of iPhoneLife Magazine. All in all I'm very happy with my folio case from iGear and the ordering process couldnt have been easier.

The iPad Custom Case and iPad Mini Custom Case are available from iGearUnlimited.com. Single units retail for $89.99 (iPad 2/3/4) and $79.99 (iPad Mini) each. Students can order with coupon code k1225off and get a 25% discount, while schools should contact iGearUnlimited.com directly to obtain discounted pricing for larger quantities.

Fact-check: Give these films Oscars for inaccuracy

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Many of this year's Oscar-nominated films are based on true stories ("Lincoln," "Zero Dark Thirty," "Argo") or on well-known novels ("Les Miserables," "Life of Pi"). And as you can imagine, it's easy for those stories to put a twist on a tale -- often intentionally, for drama's sake -- not telling it the way it was real life or in an earlier book.

Those changes mostly go unnoticed unless you're really familiar with the source material, but we found five notable ones.

Sony Pictures

The SEALs in "Zero Dark Thirty" made too much noise, says a man who should know.

1. Osama bin Laden raid was too noisy in 'Zero Dark Thirty'
Who can you believe about the death of Osama bin Laden if not the man who killed Osama bin Laden? That former Navy SEAL spoke to Esquire magazine and saw the movie for the first time with Phil Bronstein, who wrote the Esquire article. He pointed out some minor errors -- the dog on the real mission?was a Belgian Malinois, not a German Shepherd and the night-vision goggles worn by the SEALs in the film didn't exist when bin Laden was killed. But his biggest correction? The real SEALs went about their mission in silence. In the movie, a SEAL loudly yells "Breacher!" when he wants someone to blow a door at the compound, and characters call out bin Laden's name. In real life, the SEALs storming the Pakistan terrorist compound tried to keep as quiet as possible, for obvious reasons.

2. No one chased the plane onto the runway in 'Argo'
Kathleen Stafford, one of two women among the six Americans rescued from Iran in the events that inspired "Argo," told the Washington Post that the film Hollywooded up her actual experiences. "Argo" is full of fictionalized sections -- in real life, the six were split between two homes, not just the Canadian ambassador's, for one thing, and Canada's role is downplayed in the film in order to make the CIA look like more of a player. But perhaps the most dramatic scene in the film, where Iranian revolutionaries drive out on an airport runway chasing a departing plane just as it lifts off, never happened. Tony Mendez, the real CIA operative played by Ben Affleck, reports that the airport departure was "smooth as silk," with only a minor mechanical problem slightly delaying takeoff, not gun-waving revolutionaries.

Warner Bros.

"Argo" added drama to its airport scene.

3. Connecticut wasn't pro-slavery as shown in 'Lincoln'
Unless you live in the Nutmeg State, you probably didn't notice how Connecticut voted on the Thirteenth Amendment in the movie "Lincoln." But?Rep. Joe Courtney sure did. He wrote a letter to director Steven Spielberg complaining that two out of three Connecticut votes are seen being cast against abolishing slavery. In real history, all four votes from his state were pro-abolition. (The film's screenwriter?acknowledged?he changed the facts.) A Lincoln historian pointed out that the film actually got a lot of things right, including Lincoln's enjoyment of a certain bathroom joke. The historian's quibbles were minor: Mary Todd Lincoln's teeth were too white, the word "sniper" would not have been used, General Lee did not surrender from horseback, and Abe Lincoln didn't swear so much.

4. Was that song really in 'Les Mis'?
Fans of the "Les Miserables" musical know it backwards and forwards. They know what someone who's never seen "Les Mis" on stage wouldn't -- that the song "Suddenly," about Valjean's love for adopted daughter Cosette, isn't in the stage show. But that's hardly a goof, it's an intentional addition. Since it was an original piece for the film, "Suddenly" was the one song eligible to be nominated for a best original song Oscar. (We're guessing it will lose to Adele's "Skyfall.") Fans seem to like the new song. As theologian Mark Roberts points out, it's smartly written and the title?hearkens?back to a word in Victor Hugo's novel.

5. Samuel L. Jackson's favorite swear word didn't exist in 'Django' days
Much of the controversy surrounding "Django Unchained" was about its near-constant use of the n-word. But another term drew attention too. You know it: Starts with "mother," incorporates a famous f-word. Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Leonardo DiCaprio's creepy slave-hating slave Stephen, says it four times in "Django," but according to IMDb.com, that expression was unlikely to have been used until World War I. Mother--oh, never mind.

Weinstein Company

Samuel L. Jackson's favorite swear word wasn't around in slavery times.

Varitek Finds Baseball Fever Hard To Shake

By NOAH TRISTER,? AP Baseball Writer

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) _ Jason Varitek announced his retirement about a year ago? then found the baseball bug is a pretty hard one to shake.

?I became a fan,? the former Boston catcher said Wednesday. ?I was as excited for opening day as I was for a player. I was actually playing golf, and I got it on my phone and I?m watching the game.?

Varitek is back in camp with the Red Sox after being named a special assistant to the general manager in September. Whether he?s working with catchers or taking in as much information as possible about the inner workings of an organization, the former Boston captain seems at peace with his decision to walk away during spring training last year.

?I just started recently, actually doing some working out and exercising, and I couldn?t really squat down. I could squat down a little better now than I could 10 days ago,? Varitek said. ?You miss it. You miss the competition, you miss the camaraderie with the guys in the locker room, and competing. But I understand that I passed my mark.?

Varitek spent his whole big league career with the Red Sox, winning over the Boston fans with an unyielding work ethic. He caught four no-hitters, made three All-Star teams and won two World Series titles.

He was 39 when he retired, leaving a legacy that made him an ideal candidate to come to camp and work with younger players.

?The guy?s talented, he?s a good athlete. He studies hard, he?s prepared,? said catcher David Ross, who played for the Red Sox briefly in 2008 and is on the team again this year. ?I?d say he?s one of the most prepared guys I?ve ever been around. It was a lot of fun being his teammate.?

When Varitek was hired as a special assistant, general manager Ben Cherington said he?d be involved with all sorts of work, including major league personnel decisions, evaluations, and mentorship and instruction of young players.

At this point, Varitek sounds willing to be patient while sampling a wide range of tasks. He wasn?t too specific Wednesday about any possible next moves as he transitions to the next phase of his life.

?That?s the purpose of it, is to learn, and to learn once again, different avenues. ? You know the baseball side, what it?s like on the field,? he said. ?I?m enjoying these days of being on the field, because that?s what I?m most accustomed to, but that learning process _ there?s a lot of things to be involved with over the next six, eight months.?

With his golf game showing little to no improvement (?I still stink?) Varitek is enjoying the chance to provide hands-on guidance to current players at spring training. Pedro Martinez has also been around camp _ he?s a special assistant to Cherington, too.

?That?s the fun part,? Varitek said. ?It?s the game. That?s the part that I love most. I don?t play, I?m not a player anymore, so if I can pass on things or help someone, or be a helpful hand, another sounding board, then that?s what I?ll be.?

After Varitek?s departure, the Red Sox struggled through a nightmarish 69-93 season. John Farrell takes over this season as Boston?s manager, and the Red Sox are hoping for a quick return to prominence with newcomers like Mike Napoli, Shane Victorino and Joel Hanrahan.

Varitek said last season was tough to watch _ but his passion for the game and this team is still there.

?That?s all behind them. They?ve got new faces, new people, new manager, great coaching staff,? he said. ?Can?t really do much about what has happened. They?ve got to push as a team and an organization _ push forward.?

___

?NOTES: RHP Clay Buchholz, who strained his right hamstring earlier this month, threw live batting practice. ? The Red Sox play a doubleheader Thursday against Northeastern and Boston College.

As US fishing industry dwindles, diners may hardly notice

His city's best fishing days are long past it, but lifelong Gloucester resident Ron Gilson still sees what once was when he drives past what remains.

There's the waterfront lot, littered with discarded fishing nets and lobster pots, where vessels in the famed fishing fleet once docked. The clatter and grit of a top maritime machine shop downtown has been replaced by a banquet hall. On the state fish pier, where Gilson briefly parks, the sounds of year-round work have given way to the quiet whirr of his idling Prius.

To the 79-year-old, the decline of the industry has stolen jobs, community spirit and opportunity. And it's not over, Gilson said.

"This is the lowest point," he declared on a February day. "Tomorrow will be lower."

In May, New England's fishermen will again see a cut to the number of fish they can catch, this time so deeply that the historic industry's existence is threatened from Rhode Island to Maine. But as hard as the cuts are likely to hit fishing communities, local seafood eaters may not notice at all. In the region's markets, grocery stores and restaurants, imported fish dominate, and the cuts make that less likely to change.

The cuts will shrink the catch limit 77 percent for cod in the Gulf of Maine and 61 percent for cod in Georges Bank, off southeastern Massachusetts. That's the worst of a series of reductions to the catch of bottom-dwelling groundfish, such as haddock and flounder, that many fear could be fatal to the industry.

"They're going to wipe it out!" said Gilson. "The only thing that's going to be the same is the ocean you're looking at."

For fish consumers, a sharp drop in the local groundfish catch may jar a select group of diners who seek fish caught that day. But the cut's effects may not ripple further than that.

Just 9 percent of the seafood eaten in the United States is domestically caught, the federal government estimates. In New England, locally caught cod was just a slightly larger fraction of all cod eaten, 12 percent, according to fisheries economist Jenny Sun of the Portland, Maine-based Gulf of Maine Research Institute. And she estimates that could drop to 4 percent after the coming cuts.

Much of the imported cod is caught and frozen in Norway and cut in China, and there's plenty of it, Sun said. If the local cod catch dips to near nothing, fish processors "could easily fill in with imports," Sun said.

In fact, the biggest issue for one Maine seafood processing executive has been the perception that the New England industry's troubles mean he won't have fish.

But prices will likely change little after the cuts because substitutes are plentiful, said Chris Fream, senior sales executive at North Atlantic Inc., a processor in Portland, Maine.

"The sky certainly isn't falling because a) we knew it was coming and b) we've prepared for it and there's other species that are around," he said.

The remaining fishermen have limited options. The Northeast's groundfish fleet had 420 boats in 2011, a drop of 150 in just two years, and many of those who continue to fish do so because they have no choice.

Scituate fisherman Frank Mirarchi noted wryly that, at 69, he has few employment options. The fishermen he cooperates with, pooling quota and resources, have discussed taking even more boats out of the water and trying to hang in with whatever they can catch.

"This is not a long-term strategy," Mirarchi said. "Something needs to happen before 2014 or we all go down the tubes."

The crew on Gloucester fisherman Richard Burgess's two boats is family, and he said he hasn't considered selling out of the business.

"I put them out on the street, where are they going to get a goddamn job?" he said. "And these are men who have devoted their lives to feeding the country fresh fish. And now the country is stabbing us in the heart."

Groundfish accounts for 50 percent of the business for Richie Canastra, co-owner at the Whaling City Seafood Display Auction in New Bedford. He can still depend on the port's robust scallop catch, but he said he's already laid off four of 30 workers and anticipates another 10 layoffs when the cuts kick in in May.

There's talk of government aid for fishermen, after the fishery was declared an economic disaster last year. But the best hope for many in the industry seems to be a correction in the science that fishermen view as deeply flawed. There's also a belief that natural fluctuations have made fish scarce this year, and those same fluctuations can bring them back.

Canastra recalls the story about a 1928 Massachusetts license plate that featured a symbol of codfish that appears to be swimming away from the plate's abbreviation for the state. The cod catch suddenly dropped that year, prompting superstitious fishermen to demand the plate be changed to show the fish swimming toward the state name.

It was, and the cod came back to Massachusetts. It can again, Canastra said.

"My point is, there are cycles," he said.

Ports of Auckland employment dispute may be resolved... | Stuff.co.nz

Hopes are high at the Ports of Auckland that a bitter 18-month dispute with union staff over a collective employment contract will be resolved tonight.

Maritime Union New Zealand (MUNZ) officials and port staff met this morning to discuss a package of recommendations put forward by the Employment Relations Authority.

MUNZ president Garry Parsloe said the union had not had a chance to discuss the recommendations with the facilitator since they had come out, and some areas were "a bit grey".

The union would seek some clarification at a meeting with the facilitator and the port tonight.

Ports of Auckland said it would accept the authority's recommendations, with chief executive Tony Gibson expressing hope that today's meeting would put an end to the lengthy dispute.

"No-one could have anticipated that when the negotiations started on 5 August 2011, they would still be going in February 2013, but hopefully we're in the final strait. Enough is enough," he said.

Gibson said neither party would be entirely happy with the recommendations but he was optimistic the union would do a deal.

The dispute headed into facilitation nine months ago after nine months of negotiation, which came to a head with a crippling strike at the port last February and March.

About 300 wharfies are fighting the casualisation of permanent staff. A third of the port's stevedoring workforce are not union members.

In August, the Ports of Auckland posted a $12 million loss for the year to June, blaming the strike for a 10 per cent drop in container volumes.

Newt Gingrich: Democrats' 'Super Bowl Team' Beats GOP's 'Mid-Level College Team' On Technology

Newt Gingrich took a hit at Republicans Sunday, comparing the GOP's "mid-level college team" to Democrats' "Super Bowl team."

Gingrich reflected on the GOP's rebranding while on ABC's "This Week." The former presidential hopeful said the issue Republicans have with technology is "a culture problem," and that Democrats are using "the most advanced decision processes" to communicate with constituants.

?[Democrats] are a Super Bowl team that we ought to respect deeply, and we are currently a mid-level college team floundering around,? Gingrich said. ?This is a fundamental re-thinking on how you relate to the American people.?

This isn't the first time Gingrich has criticized the GOP. Gingrich slammed the GOP's lack of diversity in House committee chairs as "a real problem" in November 2012, and he hit Republicans for using "a threat they can't sustain" on the debt ceiling in January.

Bisphenol A exposure in humans may be too low to cause problems by mimicking estrogen

Feb. 15, 2013 ? A controversial component of plastic bottles and canned food linings that have helped make the world's food supply safer has recently come under attack: bisphenol A. Widely known as BPA, it has the potential to mimic the sex hormone estrogen if blood and tissue levels are high enough. Now, an analysis of almost 150 BPA exposure studies shows that in the general population, people's exposure may be many times too low for BPA to effectively mimic estrogen in the human body.

The analysis, presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting by toxicologist Justin Teeguarden of the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, Wash., shows that BPA in the blood of the general population is many times lower than blood levels that consistently cause toxicity in animals. The result suggests that animal studies might not reflect the human BPA experience appropriately.

"Looking at all the studies together reveals a remarkably consistent picture of human exposure to BPA with implications for how the risk of human exposure is interpreted," said Teeguarden. "At these exposure levels, exposure to BPA can't be compared to giving a baby the massive dose of estrogens found in a birth control pill, a comparison made by others."

In addition to evaluating the likelihood of BPA mimicking estrogen in humans, Teeguarden also analyzed another set of BPA studies that looked at the chemical's toxicity in animals and cells in the lab. These 130 studies are significant as a group because they refer to the exposures as "low dose," implying they are very relevant to human exposures.

According to his analysis, however, the "low doses" actually span an immense range of concentrations, a billion-fold. In addition, only a small fraction of the exposures in these self-described "low dose" studies are in the range of human exposures, from 0.8 percent to 7 percent depending on the study.

"The term low-dose cannot be understood to mean either relevant to human exposures or in the range of human exposures. However, this is in fact what it has come to mean to the public, as well as many in the media," said Teeguarden.

Analysis of 150 Exposure Studies

The first analysis covered 30,000 individuals, including women and infants, in 19 countries. Human blood concentrations were calculated multiple ways using many kinds of exposure data.

Teeguarden looked to see if BPA concentrations were sufficiently high to be a significant source of estrogen-like activity in the blood. Researchers have long known that BPA can bind to the same proteins that estrogen does -- called estrogen receptors -- when estrogen is doing its job in the body. However, in most cases, BPA does so much more weakly than estrogen. To trigger biological effects through receptors, BPA concentrations have to be high enough in the blood to overcome that weakness.

"Systematically testing the estrogenicity, or the bioactivity of BPA at the part per trillion concentrations we expect in human blood would seem the most scientific way to substantiate or refute this conclusion," said Teeguarden.

Teeguarden analyzed the data in these studies using multiple independent approaches applied systematically to the data from thousands of individuals. The results showed that human blood levels of BPA are expected to be too far below levels required for significant binding to four of the five key estrogen receptors to cause biological effects.

Teeguarden's analysis also confirmed the findings of many academic and government scientists that biologically active BPA is at such low concentrations in the blood that it is beneath toxicologists' current ability to detect it, raising questions about the role of sample contamination in studies reporting high levels of BPA.

Analysis of 130 Toxicity Studies

In this analysis, Teeguarden compiled all the BPA studies that included the term "low dose" as it referred to human exposure by using such terms as "low-concentration," "environmentally relevant," or "human exposure." From the 130 studies found, he and PNNL biologist Sesha Hanson-Drury compiled all the doses that were actually used in the studies.

The results showed that a small fraction of the "low doses" used in these studies are within the range of human exposures, with the vast majority being at least 10 to thousands of times higher than what humans are exposed to daily. In addition, the range of concentrations spans from upwards of 10 grams per kilogram of weight per day down to 100 picograms per kilogram of weight per day (a picogram is one millionth of a gram).

"Unfortunately, the low dose moniker has been used by some to promote the importance of selected toxicity studies, for example, in arguments to ban BPA," said Teeguarden. "For BPA and all chemicals, we need more accurate language to present these findings so the public and scientists in other disciplines can understand how human exposures compare to exposures in laboratory studies reporting toxicity."

Justin Teeguarden, Ph.D., is a senior scientist in the Systems Toxicology and Exposure Science group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. This work was entirely supported by the United States Environmental Protection Agency under the Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program.

Eric Church leads ACM nominations

NASHVILLE ? They don?t call him Chief for nothing: Eric Church is the top nominee at this year?s Academy of Country Music Awards.

The rising country music star has seven nominations for the April 7 awards show in Las Vegas. Hunter Hayes is next with six, followed by Taylor Swift and Miranda Lambert at five apiece.

Swift and Lambert are up for the academy?s top honour ? entertainer of the year ? with Lambert?s husband, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan. Swift is going for her third straight win in that category.

Shelton and Bryan will co-host the broadcast, to air live on CBS from the MGM Grand.

Along with naming nominees in a series of videos online Wednesday morning, the academy also awarded trophies in the three new artist categories.

Jana Kramer is the new female vocalist of the year, Brantley Gilbert is the new male vocalist winner and Florida Georgia Line took new vocal duo or group, as voted by fans. Those three acts will now compete for new artist of the year.

Fans will continue to have a say in that category and entertainer of the year.

Fans can vote in those categories beginning March 25 at http://VoteACM.com.

Hayes began an incredible run on the awards show circuit with a nomination for best new artist at the ACMs last year.

He didn?t win, but has since has been on a streak. He won the Country Music Association?s best new artist in November, was tied with Swift as the top-nominated country artist at Sunday?s Grammy Awards, where he performed, and now takes centre stage in Las Vegas.

?It?s amazing. That puts it in perspective,? a groggy Hayes said a few minutes after his manager woke him up with the news.

?I?m kind of feeling like I?m part of the family now, especially now, with this. That?s such an honour, such a huge compliment. This is serious. This is for real. This says that my music?s been accepted by this community and it?s unbelievable ? and that?s one of the best feelings in the world.?

Church?s Chief is up for album of the year along with Swift?s Red, Bryan?s tailgates & tanlines, Carrie Underwood?s Blown Away and Little Big Town?s Tornado.

Jay Joyce scored a rare double in the category: He produced the Church and Little Big Town albums and will take home a trophy if either wins. He?s also up for producer of the year.

Chief, released in 2011, slipped through a loophole and into the category for the second straight year. Academy rules allow an album to be nominated outside its usual qualification period if it did the bulk of its sales during the next opening.

That album?s inclusion may have cost Zac Brown Band?s Uncaged a nomination just three days after the band took home the Grammy for best country album. Another potential nominee left off the list was Brad Paisley, who had been nominated every year since 1999.

Church also is up for male vocalist of the year with 2012 winner Shelton, Bryan, Aldean and Toby Keith. Lambert will be going for her fourth straight female vocalist of the year award with Swift, Underwood, Martina McBride and Kacey Musgraves, a newcomer who earned four nominations.

Others with four nominations include Bryan and Little Big Town. That quartet is up for vocal group of the year with Lady Antebellum, which has won the award three straight times, Zac Brown Band, Eli Young Band and The Band Perry.

Surprise 2012 vocal duo winner Thompson Square is nominated in that category again along with Sugarland, Big & Rich, Florida Georgia Line, and Love and Theft.

Church also is nominated in the song and single of the year categories for Springsteen. Lambert?s Over You, Hayes? Wanted, Eli Young Band?s Even If It Breaks Your Heart and Lee Brice?s A Woman Like You round out the song of the year category.

Lambert, EYB and Hayes join Church in the single of the year category with LBT?s ?Pontoon.?

Like Hayes, the idea of family was on Lambert?s mind. She wrote ?Over You? with Shelton. It?s a song Shelton?s late father encouraged him to write about his brother, who died young.

?What an exciting day!? Lambert wrote in an email to The Associated Press. ?Country music is a family and we?re gonna have a big reunion in Las Vegas for the ACM Awards. I?m blessed every day and thrilled to be nominated, and it?s extra special to be nominated with Blake for song of the year.?

Bolshoi Ballet chief's sight recovering after acid attack

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The sight of the Bolshoi Ballet's artistic director is improving after an operation in Germany to save his vision following an acid attack, Russia's chief ophthalmologist said on Wednesday.

The January 17 assault put the spotlight on the bitter rivalries at the Bolshoi, one of the world's leading theatres, and in the fiercely competitive world of ballet.

Sergei Filin, 42, underwent several operations in Moscow before flying to Germany last week for more treatment after sulphuric acid was thrown in his face by a masked attacker.

"His left eye no longer causes so much concern. The right eye is still in a rather complex condition. But in any case, everything seems positive and optimistic now," Interfax news agency quoted eye specialist Vladimir Neroyev as saying.

The agency said a Russian eye doctor had been present during the surgery in Germany but gave no further details.

The Bolshoi has said German doctors now treating Filin have requested that information on his health and medical procedures are kept to a minimum to protect his privacy.

Such a move might also, however, help reduce the intense media attention on a saga that has damaged the Bolshoi's image.

Neroyev said last month that he expected Filin's sight to recover enough for him to be able to work again after a long period of rehabilitation.

Police have not arrested anyone over the attack. Filin says he believes he knows who was behind it and has made clear that he thinks it was connected to his work, in which he has the power to make or break careers.

Filin has not revealed any names in public but police are treating some within the troupe as suspects.

Sports News: Miami Heat: Lebron James the Best Player to Ever Play in NBA?

Feb 10, 2013; Miami, FL, USA; Miami Heat small forward LeBron James (6) is pressured by Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant (24) during thenfirst half at American Airlines Arena. Mandatory Credit: Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Lebron James is a very good player.

That last sentence might be the largest understatement every written in any sports article.

The Miami star is considered by many to be the best player in the NBA-currently, as well as in the history of the league.

That?s because at the age of 28, James is arguably playing the best basketball of his career.

Following his recent hot streak on the court- He shot 71.3 FG percent in his last five games- the question comes to mind: Can the man be stopped?

Unless you triple cover him, I think the answer is probably no.

The only problem is that when you triple cover him, the guy is also an exceptional passer, one of the most underrated of his skills in basketball.

James? career year features him averaging 27.0 points per game, with just over eight rebounds, and almost seven assists to match.

His FG percentage has also hit an all-time high for him, as he is shooting 56.2 percent of his shots in the 2012-2013 season.

Yet stats can only say so much.

It?s watching the game that gives fans a whole different opinion. For when the game enters the fourth quarter and Lebron James catches fire on the court, it?s a spectacle to watch.

You get the feeling in those instances that if James gets the ball, no shot is impossible to make.

In fact, Lebron James broke a Miami Heat record in their win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. He was the first player in the history of the franchise to score at least 30 points in five straight games.

He had 32 in the Heat?s 107-97 win.

The fact of the matter is that he makes it look easy. And basketball fans watch in wonder as the streak continues.

Mufti calls India a 'banana republic' on Afzal issue

People's Democratic Party patron Mufti Muhammad Sayeed on Monday called India [ Images ] a "banana republic" over Afzal Guru's family not being allowed to meet the Parliament attack convict before he was hanged, a day after Jammu and Kashmir [ Images ] Chief Minister Omar Abdullah [ Images ] said this was a "tragedy".

The former J and K Chief Minister and leader of the Opposition PDP also accused the Centre of following a narrow minded approach to the problem in Kashmir, alleging it has already caused serious setback to peace process.

Sayeed said it is no good to regret the inability of the government to deny Afzal's family a "last mandatory" meeting with him or deny his body to the family.

"This he said reduces Mahatama Gandhi's country, world's largest democracy and a genuine candidate for super power status as a banana republic," he said in a statement.

Omar on Sunday said it was a "tragedy" that Afzal, a resident of Sopore in KashmirValley, was not allowed to meet his family before he was hanged and not allowed a "final farewell."

Mufti said by the extent and scale of curbs put on normal life, Kashmir today does not look like part of Indian democracy.

He demanded immediate lifting of curfew imposed in the Valley after the hanging of Afzal on Saturday and other restrictions including information blockade.

He said the least the government could do to retrieve the situation to some extent in the aftermath of the execution of Guru would be to lift unconstitutional curbs on normal life and return his body to the family.

Mufti said it was "sad" that our democratic system could not accommodate some basic decency and legal requirements in dealing with an issue that could have very serious impact on J and K and its future.

He said the latest events have unfortunately created a sense of defeat among? people who have been bruised by six-and-a-half decades of "uncertainty and bloody history."

"I wish it doesn't consume another generation of Kashmiri youth but one cannot wish away the apprehension" Mufti said.
